The Last Word…

I have never been one who particularly enjoys meetings. Obviously, they have their place in the ministry of the church and it is hard to get things done (or communicate with each other) without them. However, last night’s executive board meeting was one of the best in recent memory. It was the first official board meeting of the new church year (2011-12) and not only was nearly everyone present, but all of our ministries are active and excited about what they are doing.

A cursory read through this week’s newsletter will give you an idea about some of the things that are happening, but there is also a lot coming in the weeks and months ahead. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen such an enthusiastic group of leaders.

Last week, we began our Wednesday evening Adult Christian Education series with around 40 adults participating. Larry Merkle and Melissa Moody (our Christian Education co-chairs) are both leading classes, with Larry screening sermons and presentations from the last General Assembly and Melissa leading a study of Dave Ramsey’s book, Total Money Makeover. I am very excited to be leading a Bible study on the book of Acts. In order to effectively lead a study like this one it requires me to immerse myself in the text. I know I get as much, or more, out of our study than anyone. I confess that this is the first time I have studied this amazing book so carefully. If you also wonder about the earliest days of the church, it’s not too late to join us. Even if you miss a session or two, you will get a lot of your participation.

Two other groups I continue with this year include our Chi Rho (Jr. High fellowship) and Young Adult Bible Study (Advance conference, age 19-29). Our Young Adult Bible Study meets at my home every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for a real sit-down, family style dinner, followed by a topical Bible study. We usually wrap things up around 8 p.m. Our Chi Rho group meets Sunday nights from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the church and this Sunday will be going on our 2nd annual Dollar Dash (see inside for details).

There is a lot of excitement and activity at Central Christian Church this fall. Chancel choir and the Laudate Ringers have both begun (6:15 and 7:30 p.m. respectively). Opportunities for fellowship and service for folks of all ages and interests will also be readily available in the days ahead. Please take the time to read through the Messenger each week and see where you might fit in. It is going to be a great year!
