Bible Study

Wednesday Night Adult Studies

Starting on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011, Central will be offering 3 different studies for any adult interested in participating.

A Bible study on the book of Acts. Using only our Bibles as textbooks, we will mine the treasures of Luke’s sequel to his Gospel – the amazing story of the early church, it’s birth at Pentecost, it’s growth and challenges and the many characters and leaders that brought it into being. One of the things we learn from Acts is how the church preserved its integrity and found its identity in the midst of a very powerful Greco-Roman culture. Needless to say, there are many parallels between the experience of the early church and the church today. Come and join us as we delve deep into what some have called the “Gospel of the Holy Spirit.” It will be a fun, inspiring, and thought provoking study. Rev. David Turner will lead this study in the Fellowship Hall.

Couldn’t make it to General Assembly, but like to hear good preaching? We’ll be showing DVDs of the sermons from the General Assembly. Come get connected with the general church of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)! The first will be Rev. Holly McKissick’s sermon from the opening worship, which we will watch on September 14th. Rev. McKissick started a new Disciples church before new church ministry was “cool” among Disciples. Twenty years later, Saint Andrew Christian Church, Olathe, Kansas, has welcomed 800 members, constructed one of the Disciples first “green” buildings, and taken on issues of justice and mission “from our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.” Honored with the Innovation in Ministry Award from Brite Divinity School, this story-telling preacher translates complex theological ideas into missional action for today’s Christians. Larry Merkle will moderate this offering in the Sanctuary.

A book study based on Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover. Dave condenses his 17 years of financial teaching and counseling into 7 organized, easy-to-follow steps that will lead you out of debt and into a Total Money Makeover. Plus, you’ll read over 50 real-life stories from people just like you who have followed these principles and are now winning with their money. It is a plan designed for everyone, regardless of income or age. This is not a “Christian” book, and it isn’t a Bible study on the subject of money. But this is a book about a “Proven” Plan to Financial “Fitness” that Dave and his team have developed over two decades, and that plan includes addressing the spiritual issues surrounding money. Please note: this class does require the Total Money Makeover book, which can be picked up at most bookstores. If you pre-register, we will order a supply of these books and have them available on the first night of class. Melissa Moody will lead this study in Classroom E.

These classes will meet each week at 7:00 pm and to kick off the study there will be a light dinner provided starting on the 14th at 6:15. See you there!

Young Adult Bible Study

Last year, beginning in the fall, a Bible Study for young adults started at the home of Rev. David Turner and his wife Tammy. By the end of year, a strong core group of college age and young adults were attending the twice monthly meals and study sessions. Beginning Tuesday, September 14th, our young adult Bible studies will resume. We will continue to meet at the Turner’s home (as long as we still have room) at 6:30 p.m. on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month (watch for schedule changes). We can also be found on Facebook under the name “Dayton, Ohio Advance Conference Bible Study.” We serve up hearty and nutritious meals for the stomach, mind and spirit! If you are 19-29(ish), please join us soon!

Christian Education classes are Sunday mornings 9:15 to 10:15 am.

CYF Christian Education is for all high school students. It is here that youth will have the opportunity to ask questions and explore the Bible. They will discuss current events and how as Christians we should respond. They meet in the CYF room for Christian Education classes.

Our Chi Rho middle school youth will explore scripture in order to gain a greater under-standing of themselves and our world and how the two relate to one another. Youth will find a loving, nurturing atmosphere here where they will be able express themselves and grow closer to God. They meet in the Chi Rho room each Sunday morning.

Chi Rho

Contact: Rob Bernard

Chi Rho is a fellowship group for middle school-aged youth that gives them the opportunity to be accepted and loved within a Christian community and to progress at their own pace on their spiritual journeys. Regular activities include intentional informal conversation, casual worship, game-playing.  Special activities include group outings (sometimes together with other groups from within Central), nursing home visitation, and participation in Central’s Christmas program and Youth Sunday.

Youth are welcome and encouraged to bring friends from within or outside the congregation.  All youth that participate actively in Chi Rho and those that complete the Pastor’s Class are invited to participate in an extended weekend for the Disciples Heritage Trip. This year’s trip will be to Lexington, KY where we will visit Lexington Theological Seminary as well as the Cane Ridge Meeting House (site of The Great Revival) and other attractions.  Depending on the number of youth participating, parents will be needed as drivers and chaperones.

The regular meeting time is Sunday evenings 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM at the church.  The calendar for the year is still in development.  For a rough idea, though, the calendar of activities for last year is still available.

Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time.

Christian Youth Fellowship (CYF) gives high school students a Christian environment where they are accepted, loved and nurtured. CYF also provides youth an opportunity to discuss issues relative to their lives and to grow in their own spirituality. Throughout the year, CYF will be making plans for a summer mission trip.
